Animation Films that reignite your childhood imagination
Hayao Miyazaki created a name for himself by creating countless cinematic masterpieces, winning multiple awards and paving the way for the art of animation to prosper in the world of international filmmaking — and you’re missing out if you don’t add some of his films to your watch list.
Miyazaki is one of the four founders of the profound animation company Studio Ghibli. Although it’s a Japanese animation studio, its films are not considered anime. According to Studio Giggle, a UK-based animation studio, the name “Ghibli” is from the Arabic name for “hot sahara wind” as the founders wanted “Studio Ghibli to blow new wind through the anime industry.”
Studio Ghibli films aren’t your typical fast-paced colorful anime, nor are they your typical Disney feel-good movie. They ignite feelings from deep inside that bring you back to the roots of your childhood. If you haven't had the chance to watch any of these films and experience an inner tug to relive your childhood memories, then add these five Studio Ghibli movies to your watchlist on HBO Max:
Spirited Away
Young Chihiro and her parents are on the move to a new neighborhood when the unexpected happens. They stop at an amusement park for a bite to eat, not knowing they are entering the world of Kami (the spirit world). After Chihiro’s parents are turned into pigs, she has to figure out how to free them and herself from this frightening world of spirits. Following along with Chihiro’s journey will make you feel as if you were experiencing it right there with her.
Howl's Moving Castle
Sophie lives each day in repetition working at her late father’s hat shop. That is, until she meets the mysterious wizard, Howl. Her curiosity and fondness for her new friend ends up biting her in the butt when a jealous witch curses her with a spell that ages her prematurely. The animation and acting in this film exceeds every expectation you could possibly have for a movie. You will undeniably develop an emotional connection towards the characters, especially Howl’s fire demon, Calcifer.
My Neighbor Totoro
After moving into an old country home while their mother recovers in a nearby hospital, sisters Satsuke and Mei explore the new grounds and encounter playful spirits. Totoro, the big cuddly spirit they befriend, takes them on adventures as they rediscover hope for their family’s future. This film not only takes you on an emotional roller coaster but also reminds you to go home and hug your loved ones. If you're looking for a tear jerker, this is the animation for you.
The Secret Life of Arrietty
Living in a small nook embedded under a suburban home nests tiny Arrietty and her parents. They spend their days scavenging for food and trinkets while staying hidden from the humans who inhabit the home above. Arrietty’s curiosity about humans gets the best of her when she develops a secret friendship with a young boy. The friendship created amongst these two is exciting as well as nerve-wracking as Arrietty tries to remain hidden from the other humans who could impose a threat to her and her family.
Ponyo
A goldfish princess sneaks away from her ocean kingdom to see the world above when she meets a young human boy, Sosuke. Sosuke grows very fond of her and gives her her name, Ponyo. Ponyo becomes more human-like as her yearning to live on the surface grows along with her friendship with Sosuke. This film is a bittersweet coming-of-age story that will remind you of your childhood friends who played a significant role in your early years of life.
Although these are only five out of many movies Miyazaki has successfully directed, they are films that will change your outlook on animation. These films deliver so much more than just entertainment. Each story has a deeper meaning that the viewer can decipher for themselves. Don’t waste more time watching cheesy children's movies when you could watch an animation made for all age types.
