Atmosphere, a Culture of Support Across Athletics

The MSU Athletics Department and the Bobcats have drawn attention throughout campus and Bozeman by creating an electrifying atmosphere at every sporting event. The winning culture alongside a dedicated spirit squad and marching band make gameday in Bozeman unmatched when compared to the rest of the Big Sky Conference. It’s a culture created by loving fans and athletes who bought in to the games they love. As much as we think about athletes themselves there are other aspects of gameday that define the atmosphere in Worthington Arena, Bobcat Stadium and Shroyer Gym. 

Containing around 200 members directed by Nathan Stark and Stephen Versaevel, the marching band is one of the most dynamic parts of MSU’s gameday atmosphere. The band usually gathers in Howard Hall before games to review performances, get dressed, and warm-up. When game time arrives, they are ready to cheer and perform the songs that make our sporting events so unique.

“I really like the dancing aspect of marching band or pep band,” freshman Carolina Babcock said. “When we all have coordinated dances… it’s chaotic and messy and enjoyable.”

“My favorite part, especially about football games, is what goes on before the game,” junior Danielle Espiritu said. “It’s our chance to hype up the crowd and prep the audience. That’s something the players can’t do before they come on the field, it’s nice to know we have that responsibility.”

The spirit squad feeds off the energy from fans. “Being there to support the players, the fans and the atmosphere they bring,” senior Rachel Hawsey said. “Our athletics has really gotten better this year, and our fan-base is amazing.” 

Adding to that, senior Brent Lloyd commented saying, “The fans are fantastic, this year especially, and getting to know the athletes themselves; when you get to know them and the amazing people they are, it builds into wanting to cheer them on.” 

It’s easy to see just how much emotion is wrapped up in MSU’s sporting events. The success of Bobcat teams over the past year, including football making it to the national title game, both men's and women’s basketball having historic seasons, and hockey and volleyball having successful seasons, is due in part to the support and atmosphere provided by the spirit squad and SOTW marching band.
