Blinded By Love

Are you tired of repeatedly dying your hair purple in quarantine, or walking in circles on the phone with your grandma? Perhaps you have scrolled through the TikTok “For You” page one too many times. If that is the case, I have the perfect, binge-worthy show for you to devour while in quarantine. 

“Love is Blind” is a Netflix original reality TV show that follows singles as they search for love in an unusual circumstance. The singles are not allowed to see the people that they are going on “dates” with. Instead, they go to private, soundproof pods that allow them to hear the other person's voice but never see them. 

The show hosts, Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo, claim that this experience will allow individuals to form a deep emotional connection without worrying about physical appearance. They explain their reasoning behind the series, saying, “Psychologists believe that emotional connection is the key to long-term marital success, not physical attraction.” Clearly, the show is based on pure science. 

After “hanging out” in the pods for a total of 10 days, the couples either choose to get engaged or leave the show. The couples that choose to get engaged are sent to Mexico for a pre-wedding honeymoon, where the drama continues. Shortly after their honeymoon, they move in together and begin planning their wedding, which takes place just about five weeks after meeting each other in the private pods. 

Although the show was the #1 streamed show on Netflix for several weeks, viewers have very different opinions about the series. One reviewer said, “Love is blind is toxic, revolting - and totally addictive.” Another said, “I really enjoyed watching Love is Blind. This was a unique way for singles to meet and get to know each other, void of all outside distractions like family and social media....without being able to prejudge visually.”

Yes, the show sounds absolutely ridiculous, but it is also ridiculously entertaining. As the show unfolds, the audience will see rivalries develop, dramatic couple fights, and if love is truly blind.
