Bozeman Has Lost The Novelty of Antique Stores
A year ago, a walk down Main Street would have included a quick trip to a coffee shop, thrifting and a stroll through both of the antique stores which were filled with all sorts of oddities.
Thrift stores in the US have increased in both popularity and prices in the last year largely due to trends on TikTok. On the flip side, the last two antique stores on Main Street have closed up shop entirely.
This has left Main Street feeling more like a trendy tourist trap than a cultural hub. The influx of corporate influence in Bozeman is present from the infiltration of stores like Lululemon and Starbucks — antique stores are just the first loss of many. Sadly, I believe that antique stores may never come back to Bozeman due to overcompetition and increasingly higher costs.
True gems are found in the antique stores. While other unique outlets, such as thrift stores, focus on clothing sourced from many different patrons, antique stores deliver a curated collection stemming from the owner's individual interest. The vibes and aesthetics within an antique store all come together to form an important identity both inside and outside the store.
Part of the reason for the fall of antique businesses is that they are being run by a predominantly older demographic. Each item comes with a comment or a story while they use a calculator to add up a ten-dollar purchase and write down your receipt on a slip of paper. The process of visiting an antique shop is endearing and personal.
On the outside, antique stores added to the atmosphere of the street and were an affordable option to walk through. Bozeman must continue to promote local stores that are affordable. Catering toward more high-end clothing stores drains the life from what should be the beating heart of Bozeman. It also displays an evolving lack of diversity on Main Street which creates a shallower experience to residents and tourists alike.
As a community, we should not settle for another corporate chain or another basic thrift shop. A storefront is more than just the items being sold. It is about the look from the window and how all these glass walls combine to create a walkable street which is beckoning to be explored. Antique stores were a vital part of this process.
Creating a window which allowed us to peer into the culture and history of the town while also picking up something memorable in the moment. You are not just buying a memory of the past. Thrift stores sell clothes which wither and fade away with time but antique stores let you hold onto the memory of that day forever.
