Comedy Reborn in “The Rehearsal”

If you’re looking for a good laugh while you  procrastinate on your homework, I’d highly recommend HBO’s, “The Rehearsal.” After premiering in July, “The Rehearsal” has proven to be entertaining, thoughtful, witty and a completely new type of show. Written and produced by actor and comedian Nathan Fielder, who gained popularity from his last show “Nathan for You,” the show will make you both laugh and ponder your own life.

The show contains a very unique kind of humor. Fielder’s awkward yet hilarious people skills that were a staple in “Nathan for You” continue to shine. Throughout the show, Fielder aims to help regular people he finds on Craigslist with their everyday problems. He uses his vast resources and elaborate sets to simulate these problems in entertaining and comedic ways so they are able to practice these situations before they happen.

“Fielder [is] trying to help alleviate anxiety through the practice of rehearsing,” said Jasmine Dayan, a licensed clinical psychologist and cognitive behavioral therapist in an interview with Esquire. “He’s able to help the participants reduce their anxiety by going through every scenario possible. That’s very similar to role-playing or exposure therapy.”

I have never seen a show make serious life issues so hilarious. The time and thought that has gone into “The Rehearsal” is remarkably impressive. The relatable, real-life problems that Fielder aims to fix will have you on the edge of your seat, almost unable to watch the television. The guest stars are increasingly hilarious as well, and they bring unparalleled drama and comedy to the show.

Overall, I highly recommend the show for comedy and television enthusiasts alike. You can watch “The Rehearsal” on Hulu or HBOmax with a subscription.
