Ditch streaming services. Get inspired by the Golden Globes
In the age of streaming services, it is evident that live television is no longer sought out or viewed as desirable. We have decided what to watch based on what society deems as “trending” rather than what is being broadcasted on cable TV in current time. With streaming services such as Netflix, HBO and Hulu, we have discarded award shows such as the Golden Globes and by doing so have missed out on outstanding pieces of media.
Watching the Golden Globes will entice you to watch a new TV series — and movies that you otherwise would not have discovered — while simultaneously educating you in a fun, immersive experience that only happens once a year. The value of learning the stories, and finding inspiration in new pieces of media, is a luxury you could only enjoy by watching these live award shows first hand.
The 2023 Golden Globes was broadcasted on NBC network on January 10, and I tuned in to see what films have made history — and to broaden my film horizons. Watching the award show live for the first time in eight years was an interactive experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves movies and, like me, is interested in expanding their film palate. It was thrilling to watch everything unfold in real time, and be a part of film history.
Watching the Golden Globes was an educational journey as well. I learned about the costume and set designs, as well as the inspiration behind the stories told on our screens from the mouths of the writers and directors who brought them to life.
I gained a deeper understanding of the significance of each film that won big that night, and an up close and personal look at the actors who made these films a reality. The intimacy of seeing everyone involved in a film ignited a passion in me that I could have never gotten from just mindlessly picking the trending films or shows on a streaming service.
The biggest takeaway I got from this experience was a short list of films that I would recommend to any college student. No matter what genre you prefer, there is something new for everyone to watch from the Golden Globe awards. These are my recommendations and insight on the top three films and TV series you should watch to start your spring 2023 semester off fresh:
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
If you are looking for an offbeat comedy with action, adventure, LGBTQA+ representation and fantasy, check out “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”. This film is a great go-to if you're looking to escape reality and take your mind off homework for a few hours. There is a level of seriousness that is perfectly balanced with comedy. It is a stress free and charming story that will keep you guessing with its chaotic, fun and fantastical plot.
The White Lotus
If you have a day off of school or work and are looking for a binge worthy TV series, “The White Lotus” is the perfect two season show for you to start. A dark comedy with a star studded cast and beautiful cinematography, this series will inspire you to take a trip to Italy or Hawaii. Filled with unexpected plot twists and fleshed out characters, this award winning series will leave you shocked, speechless and wanting more.
Abbott Elementary
If you are a fan of mockumentaries such as “The Office” or “Parks and Rec.”, the new comedy series “Abbott Elementary” is perfect for you. Despite this being a comedy at its core, the series takes place in a very real setting: A fictional poorly funded school in Philadelphia with the teachers being the main characters as they try to cultivate a fun and positive learning environment. The series does a phenomenal job at depicting the struggles of teachers and students in a low income elementary school. The witty banter and a familiar setting of a school makes the show a family friendly favorite. This sitcom is a light hearted and enduring choice for anyone looking for a laugh.
Whether you unearthed an obscure film or want to start watching an academy-acclaimed series, tuning into the Golden Globes will not disappoint. Challenge yourself this new semester to step out of the realm of streaming services, and view a live awards show on cable! Watch the next Golden Globe awards, and dive into a new genre of film that you have been skeptical about. You will be pleasantly surprised at the impact it has on your future viewing choices going forward. Awards shows present an opportunity to broaden a series fanbase and you, the viewer, could be a part of that fanbase by discovering something new and falling in love with it.
