Horror Movies Impact Your Mental Health
Have you noticed that horror movies that we used to think were scary barely even get a flinch nowadays and the things that are in current horror movies are some of the most inhumane scenes that have ever been thought of? Horror movies today are more graphic and psychologically terrifying than ever. The world has become so violent and full of horrifying events that what used to be considered awful and graphic has now been deemed as tame for the horror genre.
How does this affect us as viewers and consumers? Since we have become less easily scared, directors and storytellers have had to resort to portraying gruesome and graphic stories through the media to get the same impact that simple scares used to have. The impact that these newer movies have on the mental health of the younger generation watching them is quite large and may be one of the reasons that mental illness has become so prevalent lately.
Not only do these movies induce the subconscious to have terrifying images circulating in it at all times, they can also impact the way one sleeps. This is due to a phenomenon called post-horror euphoria that causes blood to rapidly pump and adrenaline to spike, which makes it extremely difficult for the person to relax and sleep.
Not only is the sleep of the viewer impacted, the aftermath of watching a gruesome movie is synonymous with having an increase in negative emotions that could lead to things such as suicidal thoughts if continued for too long. One of the negative emotions that can be enhanced by horror movies is anxiety. Those who suffer with anxiety are more sensitive to the heart-racing impact that horror movies have on people. For example, this sensitivity can lead to panic attacks and an increase in intrusive thoughts.
While horror movies tend to have negative effects on those who watch them, there is also the possibility of them having positive effects on some people. For some with conditions such as mood disorders and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, horror movies can serve as a safe way for them to face their fears, as well as feel as though they are in control of what is happening to them. For example, those with severe anxiety may watch horror movies to feel in control of what is making them anxious.
This all depends on how the viewer chooses to experience the movie. It is important to watch these movies in a healthy way if they are something that you enjoy. Make sure to know what sub-genre interests you and to stay away from those that trigger any negative emotions. Knowing when to take a break from this media is also helpful and can contribute to you having a positive experience with the horror genre. Remember that horror movies are not the only way that you can get into the fall spirit and experience the fun of Halloween. Do not forget to get out there and have fun this season while still protecting your mental well-being. Happy October!
