How to have fun in the sun in Montucky — off the beaten path

After just about nine months of winter, I think it's safe to say we are all more than ready for summer. Now that the sun has started to come out, we can plan our summer bucket lists. If you're going to be staying in Montana for the summer here are a few things you’ll want to check out.

Crystal Park:

If you're not afraid to get dirty, grab a shovel and grater and head out to Crystal Park in Dillon, MT. This park already contains holes around 3-6 feet deep that you can continue to dig in or, if you're feeling up for a challenge, you can dig up your own hole. The best part is that whatever you dig up, you get to keep. The crystals can range in size and color. You’ll find some clustered together and others that are tiny which are perfect for jewelry making. The color of the crystal can be clear, white, gray or purple. Look out for the purple crystals, also known as amethyst, as they are rarer to come across.

Pine Creek music:

Music, beer and the mountains: name a better combo. Pine Creek Lodge in Livingston is a great venue to check out this summer. If you're looking for a concert that won’t break your bank, then you're in luck because most of the events are free. The best part is that if you have a dog, they don’t have to stay home alone and they are welcome at the venue as long as they're on a leash.

There’s nothing better than shopping for something half price. If you get an itch to shop this summer and pick up some staple pieces, then head out to Dillon, MT to the Patagonia Outlet. This outlet has discounted past-season gear and clothing.

Look for treasures on Yellowstone River:

Floating the Yellowstone during the summer is always a must. The sun is out shining and when you get hot you can just hop right in. The next time you float or head out to the river, set aside time to look for agates, petrified wood and other cool one-of-a-kind rocks. Many of these agates are believed to be over 60 million years old, so they're definitely worth taking home.

Float the Madison River:

If you’re looking for a calmer float that doesn’t require much work then head out to the Madison River, aka Montana’s lazy river. Grab some friends, a cooler full of your favorite beverages, a waterproof speaker and some tubes or paddle boards and put in at your preferred spot to get in the ideal float. You certainly won't be disappointed with the views.
