October movies / Ellie Ayers

Now that it’s officially a spooky season, it’s time to get into the spirit and start watching all things that scream Halloween. October signals the start of perfect chilly evenings to bundle up by a fire with friends and family and pop some popcorn for one of the must-see movies below.

Halloweentown:

Where to watch: Hulu Premium, Disney+, fuboTV

As a classic childhood favorite that is a must-watch when Halloween rolls around, this movie follows a young girl who soon discovers she is a witch and ventures to a secret world with her siblings to help her grandmother fight a strange evil that is taking over the town. This old Disney series will make you feel as if you were back in the good old days when you were looking through Halloween catalogs to find the perfect costume, trading your candy after a night of trick or treating and, of course, telling not-so-spooky stories. Grab some friends, bake some pillsbury cookies and curl up as you binge this series on a chilly October night.

Casper:

Where to watch: Netflix

Casper is another family-friendly movie that won’t have you hiding under your blanket the whole time. Casper the friendly ghost haunts an abandoned mansion in Maine until a specialist moves in, along with his daughter, to communicate with these peaceful spirits. This feel-good movie is another great throwback to watch this season in remembrance of your childhood.

Barbarian:

Where to watch: Hulu and Max

Switching the vibe from cozy to spine chilling, Barbarian isn’t a movie that you’ll want to watch alone. This eerie movie is about an Airbnb that gets double-booked by both a man and a woman who start to realize they have more to fear than each other. If you love a good horror movie with an even better plot twist, then add this to your watchlist. Although this movie classifies as a horror movie, it has a hint of comedy that makes you feel as if you might be able to fall asleep that night.

Practical Magic:

Where to watch: Hulu

Love, magic and secrets. Coming from a magical family, two sister witches cast dangerous spells after one tries to escape from an abusive relationship and the other is suffering from a heartbreak. These two witches bring magic to the modern day whether they want to or not. If you're looking for an old nostalgic movie that screams Halloween spirit then kick back and accept that you're going to want to dress as a witch after this movie.

Bodies Bodies Bodies:

Where to watch: Showtime, Hulu, Roku and Paramount

Twenty year olds get a mansion to themselves, what could be spookier? A group of friends get stuck at a mansion after a hurricane blows in and decide to play a game that takes the turn for the worst. This comedy-horror movie will have you on the edge of your seat questioning every character and not possibly knowing what could come next.

Watching spooky movies is great this time of year, but it's even better when you grab a group of friends to join you. Take an excursion to the Regal Gallatin Valley Theater and check out some of the Halloween movies they feature this month. Hocus Pocus will be playing from Oct. 6-19 in honor of their 30th anniversary. A Nightmare Before Christmas starts on Oct. 20.

If you cannot wait to get your thrills on, view one of their hair-raising films like The Exorcist: Believer, Saw X or A Haunting In Venice.
