While the Cats may have lost on the field in the annual Brawl of the Wild on Saturday, Nov. 20, the MSU and Gallatin Valley community came together to win the annual Can the Griz fundraiser. The off-field rivalry bands the University of Montana (UM) and MSU communities together each year for Can the Cats and Can the Griz, respectively. Proceeds from the competition in Bozeman, which ran from Nov. 6 until the rivalry game on Nov. 20, go to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank and Bounty of the Bridgers Food Pantry to help families in-need during the holiday season.
This year the Cats canned the Griz, donating 204,469 pounds of food and $449,657. According to the Office of Student Engagement, which coordinates the yearly fundraiser, the monetary and canned donations will provide a total of nearly 654,126 pounds of food going into the Bozeman community. Meanwhile, the UM and Missoula communities donated 583,009 pounds to their local food bank.
The do-good rivalry competition has occurred annually for 22 years, with the Cats’ community claiming victory in 18 of the years. While we may have given the Griz a chance to hold the Brawl of the Wild trophy this year, we kept our winning streak going through the food drive.
