As many students recall, a large portion of the roof of the Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center collapsed this past spring due to excessive snow build-up. All of the public court space within the fitness center was lost to damage, and the entire fitness center shut down for the rest of the academic year.
The majority of the fitness center has been reopened as of Aug. 19 with the exceptions of the swimming pool, bouldering walls, functional training room, and racquetball courts. The bouldering wall opening date has been changed multiple times, but it is currently scheduled for Thursday, Oct.10. The functional training room and racquetball courts are promised to open at some point in October, but the swimming pool will remain closed for the academic year.
To temporarily replace court space lost in the roof collapse, MSU put up two inflatable domes on campus. They will likely stay up for several years during the planning and construction phases of the permanent replacements.
The North and South Domes opened on Tuesday, Oc.t 1. The North Dome houses four full-size courts that will be utilized by Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center members, activity classes and health and human development classes, intramurals, club sports and special events. South Dome holds two full-size court and has wood floors to accommodate basketball and volleyball. Access to the South Dome is by reservation only.
Chandler DeLude and Derrick Olsen, both juniors at Montana State, were found shooting hoops in North Dome last week. They both used to practice on the courts in the fitness center multiple times per week, but due to the roof collapse, have been without court space for a while now. When asked about their first impressions of the domes, DeLude said, “I’ll probably be back here again tomorrow. The floors aren’t hardwood, but beggars can’t be choosers in this case. This place is great.”
Feel free to swing over to the North Dome Monday through Thursday 4-6 p.m. and Fridays 4-7 p.m. to play basketball, volleyball, or soccer. While you’re there, check out the awesome light fixtures! Hidden gems.
