Nominations set for 93rd Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science recently announced the nominees for the 2021 Academy Awards — also known as the Oscars — along with information about the event.

According to the Academy, the Oscars will be held in-person on Sunday, April 25. Event organizers decided against a Zoom attendance option, and all invited guests will have to be physically present at the event or miss out completely. Additionally, casual wear will not be permitted at the Oscars. The Academy asked attendees to dress up in an effort to make the event “inspirational and aspirational.”

Last week, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas announced the list of Oscar nominees on  behalf of the Academy. “Mank”, a movie about Herman J. Mankiewicz, screenwriter of “Citizen Kane,” received 10 total nominations, the most for any film at this year’s Oscars. Also poised to win big at the 2021 Academy Awards are “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “The Father,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal”and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” with each film receiving six nominations.

Chadwick Boseman will be honored at the Oscars this year, nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his part in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Boseman passed away in 2020 after battling cancer. He is best known for his role as King T’Challa in the Marvel film “Black Panther,” but this year’s Oscars nomination is his first.

This year was big for marginalized groups in film as well. For the first time in 93 years, two women, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell were nominated for best director — Zhao is also the first Chinese woman to be nominated in this category. In fact, this year showed the most female nominations in Oscars history, with 70 women receiving 76 nominations. Muslim actor Riz Ahmed and Korean American actor Steven Yeun were also nominated in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, another first for the award show. While there is criticism to be had about how long it took for these recognitions, it’s definitely a push in the right direction for equality in the film world.

The Oscars will air on Sunday, April 25, at 6 p.m. MST on ABC. For a complete list of nominees, visit,https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2021.
