Promising golf team preps for conference finals

The MSU women’s golf team is driving their way into the Big Sky Conference Championships. 

“Our Big Sky Conference is on April 17, 18 and 19. We want to come out on top. I think this team has the capabilities as far as any team we’ve had so far,” said Head Coach Brittany Basye. 

“We’ve broken a couple of team records, so by far this year I have the best team we’ve ever had at Montana State. Based upon scores and the trajectory that we’re going is the best that we’ve seen here at Montana State,” Basye said.

Looking ahead, the Bobcats have one more tune-up tournament they will host in Goodyear, Arizona from April 9-11 before the Big Sky Conference Championships the following week. Pending their results, regionals and the national tournament will hopefully follow after that. 

“I feel like this team is going to go very far, very soon. At some point it’s all going to come together and it’s gonna be insane,” said junior Scarlet Weidig. 

Weidig is definitely a leader for this historic MSU team. She is averaging almost three strokes better than anyone else on the team per round, but golf isn’t just an individual sport, and that’s what makes this team so special. 

“It was definitely very cool to see that we started not that hot, but we all got closer, we all started learning what we wanted from this experience and the results that we wanted to get; to be able to finally be like alright this is what we’re all going to strive for,” Weidig said. 

Coming from a big school, Weidig has felt the positive effects of the smaller environment and is looking forward to the years to come, she said.

“This is my first year of competing at MSU. Being a red shirt freshman means I didn’t play my freshman year so I get another year of eligibility after my senior year. Coming from a bigger school, not having such a great relationship with my coach, it was awesome to come here and see how much coach cares about every single one of us,” Weidig said. 

Basye, who has been coaching for 20 plus years, said she’s seen hundreds of players and many different teams come through the system, but something feels special about this team. A lot of the time, it’s hard to choose a top five to compete at tournaments, but having such a solid core has helped them gain chemistry, which is important going into the most important part of the season. 

“We have a lot of really good kids. The fall is very important to my determination as to who is going to travel in the spring. I had five players who really stood out this semester, but in previous semesters it’s tough [to leave people behind],” Basye said. 

The team is getting both mentally and physically prepared for the toughest tournament of the year. With some low-scoring rounds and maybe even a hole in one, we’ll hopefully see our ‘Cats playing at both regionals and the national tournament as spring turns to summer. 

“Golf is crazy, anybody could be playing their best three days and come out on top. I don’t wanna get too far ahead, but I see some promise. These girls are competitors. It’s time to put on our game face and go to work,” Basye said.
