Raucous return for comic Robinson

As MSU Debut festivities roll on, the university once again played host to the comedic talents of California’s Becky Robinson. What followed was a night of side-splitting comedy; a pre-prepared routine riffing off the highs and lows of student life that was seamlessly punctuated with witty and off the cuff crowd interaction.

As the show was about to begin, the audience was informed that Robinson was delayed and was to be supported by a comedian named Susie Chapstick—later revealed to be Robinson acting as a 45-year old recently-single ski enthusiast. Chapstick’s routine consisted mainly of dirty one-liners aimed at making the largely freshman audience squirm in their seats. Despite this, Chapstick provided some fantastic moments of crowd interaction. Overly confident hecklers were quickly silenced with sharp wit and great humour, left red-faced in their seats after being immediately taken apart in front of a live audience.

Chapstick’s over-the-top character and routine provided the perfect foil for Robinson’s main act. The uncomfortable one-liners were replaced with more descriptive monologues that perfectly captured what it’s like to be a college student today. From romantically unsuccessful Halloween parties to the extravagant drinking culture of today’s students, Robinson delivered a routine that all the audience could relate to. Her self-depreciative reflections on college life were met with embarrassed groans from those who recalled similar experiences and raucous laughter from the rest.

The audience was treated to an expletive-laden, witty and often downright uncomfortable show, well attuned to the hilarious intricacies of student life. The brash and over-the-top performance from Chapstick contrasted and complimented well with the more subtle delivery of Robinson’s main act. It was a perfect fit for new and returning Bobcats in attendance at MSU Debut.
