Solving the mid-semester blues

The middle of the semester can be an extremely strenuous time for many university students. With assignments and stress quickly piling up, it can be a time of very little laughter and even less time for fun. Not to mention, the overcast and gloomy autumn weather adds to the dismal mid-semester atmosphere.

Luckily, students of MSU have the perfect opportunity to escape from the anxiety of midterms and seasonal sadness by attending a “Something Funny Improv” show here on campus.

“Something Funny Improv”, an MSU student group, performed a show that forced smiles onto each audience member in attendance.

The entertaining show was seasonally themed and focused on spooky, but silly scenes. The show began with a performance by an all-girl group which consisted of five improv- loving gals from MSU. The girls group acted out a scene centered around a Halloween party. Within the skit, the audience watched one of the performers slowly melt, another become possessed, and another suffer from chronic jazz hands.

After the Halloween hijinks there were two short introductory skits followed by two longer skits.

The first long skit consisted of a museum in chaos, a bunch of donuts with a mysterious ingredient, a battle between mummies and neanderthals, a melting statue made of butter and multiple children running around lost in a frenzied museum.

The final scene was just as humourous and random, featuring multiple murders by a video game obsessed killer, named Billy Bob Jones who just wanted to see a dead body, and a character infatuated with karate, just trying to make it cool again.

At the end of the show, the audience looked visibly happier and much less stressed. Watching the happy reactions and out of control laughter of the audience members was just as entertaining as the performance itself.

If you are interested in seeing a hilarious performance by the “Something Funny Improv” group, they have a show every other Sunday in the Procrastinator Theater at 7:30 p.m. They also welcome anyone interested in performing to join them in the SUB room 168 beginning at 4 p.m. each Sunday.
