The Bobcat Football Team competed in their first game of the season on Saturday, Aug. 31 against FBS P5 opponent Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. After the first quarter it seemed Tech’s quick-pace air raid attack would be too much for the Cats, as the Red Raiders held a 14-0 lead. In the second quarter redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Bauman was able to complete a 31-yard strike to Coy Steel for each player’s first touchdown as a Bobcat. Later in the second the Cats had an opportunity to even the score but an overthrown deep ball to junior Troy Andersen forced the Cats to punt. Texas Tech quickly picked up from where they had left off, eventually beating MSU 45-10. While the Bobcats struggled competing against an FBS opponent, Head Coach Jeff Choate said on Monday he thought they stayed poised. In a hostile road environment the Cats won the turnover battle and only had two penalty calls. Despite their loss, the Bobcats moved up one spot in the FCS STATS Top-25 poll, putting them at 13th in the nation ahead of Gold Rush.
