The Cats came out fired up in their home opener against Idaho State and never looked back. Junior Finn VaughanKraska had a great day leading the Bobcats with three tries in the first half. Freshmen Jackson Ellbogen-Jackson and Tommy Pappas each had two tries. Freshmen Jack Ritterson and Chinua Ogu also scored tries in the first half. Senior Thomas Kling added 8 conversion kicks to make the half-time score 61-0.
In the second half, senior Harrison Howe led the scoring with two tries from his flyhalf position. Senior captains Jacob Lunsford and Pete Millen each had one try a piece. Freshmen Jordan Moser and Joshua Brischke scored their first tries as Bobcats. Kling added three more conversion kicks. The Bobcats ended the day with a margin of 97-0. The freshmen received a great deal of playing time and put on a show. Freshman Connor Ericksen stood out with his impressive ability to read the defense and set up big plays.
The men’s team returns to action in two weeks to play University of Northern Colorado at home.
The Montana State women’s team played against long time rival, Utah State. This year’s team has seen great potential in the freshman group. They saw six freshman start and fight their way through a tough game, with an additional six new players making the 23-person roster. In their second game of the season the newcomers showed eagerness and willingness to battle. This year’s team is thrilled to continue on the club’s legacy and see it grow every day. They matched Utah State for tries on Saturday made by senior Alecia Panagakis (2), junior Quinn Noonan, and freshmen Grasey Szwedkowicz and Gabby Lykins, but fell short in conversions leading to a 27-33 loss. They travel to Orem, Utah this weekend to take on Utah Valley.
