The Bozeman Band that rose to success through high school and college

Before their graduation from high school, a group of best friends experimented with songwriting and composing, setting a goal to record and release their very own album. This quickly became the story of the newest folk band out of Bozeman “Richy Mitch and The Coal Miners.”

The band consists of Mitch Cutts, Nic Haughn, and Jakob Ervin.

Richy Mitch and The Coal Miners recorded their first album, titled “RMCM,” during their senior year of high school in 2017, according to the band’s website. Most of the album was recorded in a closet underneath a staircase in Haughn’s parents' house. However, this did not stop the band from releasing their debut album. “RMCM” was released in May of 2017, on their high school graduation day.

After graduating high school, the members spread out over the country. This dispersal forced the band to become more organized. They used academic breaks and weekends to create their sophomore album, “Solstice,” according to their bio.

The third album, titled ‘Subliming’ took the band over two years of long-distance collaboration, recording and mixing to perfection. It explores change, what it means to be a DIY band and the relationship between the art and the artist.

The band has also begun playing live shows, which they prepare for at a home studio in Bozeman, according to their website. This spring, they are preparing to join Ruston Kelly at select shows on “The Weakness Tour;” the closest show to campus will be on May 5 in Boise, ID.

Today, the very first song, “Evergreen,” on their debut album, has over 23 million streams on Spotify, and the band now averages over 3.6 million monthly listeners, according to the streaming platform. Another popular song by Richy Mitch and The Coal Miners, “Lake Missoula,” has over 16 million streams on Spotify.
