Belgrade community members support Activities Director Toby Robinson at Belgrade school board meeting

BELGRADE — Belgrade community members came out in force Monday evening in support of Activities Director Toby Robinson, speaking passionately about his recent reassignment to a middle school physical education position.

The meeting at City Hall was packed with people standing in groups at the back of the room and against the walls.

On May 1, Superintendent Dede Semarad sent an email to Belgrade News about Robinson’s departure, writing only that “Toby Robinson will be moving into a PE/Health position at Belgrade Middle School starting this fall. We thank him for his five years of service as the High School Activities Director.”

During the public comment section Monday, supporters stood and took their allotted two minutes at the podium to sing Robinson’s praises and share their dismay at his reassignment.

The room’s reactions was very positive, with people applauding and nodding in agreement.

“This situation directly affects me and my position,” Belgrade High School wrestling coach Bryce Weatherston said.

Weatherston was notified of Robinson’s departure in a group text in which he said he would continue to give 110% until he left.

“I know he’s not perfect, none of us are, but from a coaching standpoint it’s hard to find any shortcomings,” Weatherston said.

Weatherston also said that he hoped the board would give Robinson the option to be reinstated and let him decide whether to return. Weatherston added he believes the community wants Robinson to remain as activities director.

Another Booster Club member said she has “serious questions about leadership” on the board and asked it not to renew Semerad’s contract.

Shianne Erickson, a Belgrade parent and former colleague of Robinson’s, said the community wants to know the reason behind Robinson’s reassignment, but it would be up to him to share that.

“The district owes the community some answers,” she said.

Robinson attended the meeting. He heard the public comment and left before the meeting ended and later told the Chronicle he had no comment.
