Bozeman bike crash video sparks safety reminder as riders hit streets, trails

The crash involving a cyclist and a pickup truck occurred near the intersection of South Seventh Avenue and West Aspen Street in Bozeman on the morning of May 10. 

The incident happened around 10:25 a.m. Security cameras at the nearby U-Haul captured the crash.

As of Sunday, the cyclist was in stable condition, according to Quincy Balius, a spokesperson for the Bozeman Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing.

MISSOULA, Mont. — Warmer weather is bringing more riders onto Montana's streets and trails, making safety considerations important this time of year.

Aaron Wilson, planning manager for Missoula Public Works and Mobility, said riders should stay alert wherever they travel.

“We have phrase called share the road. That applies whether you're on a trail or on street bike lanes, wherever you might be riding or traveling. That means being aware of your surroundings, what's happening [and] the rules and the laws dictating how you should be operating,” said Wilson.

He also explained that busy trails this time of year call for extra attention and more predictable riding.

“Providing some good recognition to other trail users, being predictable, just slowing down a little bit and recognizing that it gets busy this time of year. There's a lot of people out using those trails. We all just need to sort of take a breath, slow down and be aware of what else is going on around us,” said Wilson.

Bike safety also includes basic maintenance, according to Alex Gallego, owner of Missoula Bike Works.

“The biggest thing that I see is oftentimes people's tires are under-inflated and so I'll see them riding around in a squashed down tire. The problem with that one is it makes it more difficult to pedal that. Also, it oftentimes results in a flat,” said Gallego.

He also recommended checking that the chain is properly lubricated and that brake pads have enough rubber before heading out.

Wilson and Gallego also suggested using a headlight and taillight at night and wearing a helmet.
