Butte man shot and killed by police last week after allegedly pointing shotgun identified

An allegedly armed man who was shot and killed by Butte police last Thursday night has been identified as Gary Leroy Johnson, 82, of Butte.

Butte-Silver Bow County Coroner Jason Parrish said Monday that Johnson’s relatives have been notified of his death.

Just after 10:30 p.m. on April 16, a woman called 911 to report Johnson, her ex-husband, had fired multiple shots at her with a shotgun.

When officers arrived at the home in the 4800 block of Hope Road, they found the ex-wife unharmed and Johnson in an attached garage.

According to the police report, Johnson refused to drop the shotgun and then raised the firearm toward an officer, at which time officers fired at Johnson, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

He died at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation of the Montana Department of Justice-Division of Criminal Investigation.
