Jason Parish resigns as Butte-Silver Bow coroner; no reason immediately provided

Jason Parish, Butte-Silver Bow’s interim coroner, has resigned his position effective immediately.

Parish, who previously was a computer specialist and public information officer for Butte-Silver Bow, also served as a deputy county coroner.

B-SB Chief Executive J.P. Gallagher confirmed Parish’s resignation, which was effective Thursday.

“We respect Mr. Parish’s decision and appreciate his service to the community,” said Gallagher. “At this time, we are not providing additional details regarding the resignation.”

Selected for the position by the B-SB Council of Commissioners on Nov. 5, 2025, Parish was appointed after the resignation of Coroner Lori Durkin, who was on paid leave following a pending lawsuit alleging negligence that was filed against her office and the county.

Ten of the 12 commissioners chose Parish for the interim job. Parish was running unopposed as coroner in the November general election.

Gallagher said the focus now is working with the Council of Commissioners on ensuring a smooth transition in the coroner’s office and continuing to serve the public effectively.

The chief executive said Deputy Coroner Marcee Cameron will be the acting coroner until the Council of Commissioners takes action.

“I believe Chairman John Morgan will have something on the agenda for next Wednesday for next steps which should be appointing an interim coroner,” said Gallagher. “The council will decide what process they want to take as far as fulfilling the elected position until the next general election.”
