Montana's Shakespeare in the Parks returns for 54th year

This summer, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will present "Much Ado About Nothing" and "The Merchant of Venice" as the barnstorming troupe embarks on its 54th season.

The company will perform in 64 communities across Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota and Washington.

“The beginning of a new season is always a fun and exciting time around here. Our team and crew have been working hard to put together performances that not only honor Shakespeare’s immortal stories, but also bring about new relevance and understanding in today’s world. We can’t wait to see these stories come alive on stage,” said Kevin Asselin, executive artistic director.

The tour opens June 10-13 in Bozeman with "The Merchant of Venice" at the MSU Duck Pond. "Much Ado About Nothing" follows on the same site June 17-20.

"Much Ado About Nothing" will be at Chico Hot Springs on July 21 and Pony on Sept. 5. "The Merchant of Venice" will be staged at Silver Gate on July 12, Gardiner on July 22, Big Sky on July 25, Livingston on Sept. 4 and closes the summer tour in Bozeman on Sept. 8.

"Much Ado About Nothing" speaks to the joy and uncertainty of love, reputation, and the ways that community shapes our understanding of one another. This lively comedy unfolds in the aftermath of war, where returning soldiers and welcoming hosts find themselves drawn into courtship, clever schemes, and shifting perceptions. Among a vibrant cast of characters, Shakespeare explores how easily we can be misled, and how resilience, honesty, and grace can restore both trust and connection.

"The Merchant of Venice" explores justice, mercy, prejudice, and the longing to belong in a divided world. As Bassanio seeks Portia’s hand and Antonio enters a dangerous bond with Shylock, the young Jessica risks everything to leave her father’s house in search of love and freedom. Through romance and courtroom drama, Shakespeare examines the cost of exclusion and the transformative power of mercy.

Shakespeare in the Parks spends 200 days on the road, covering some 30,000 miles.
