MSU policies on campus violence

Since the Parkland school shooting on Feb. 14, which left 17 students and faculty dead, national attention has been heightened on academic campus violence and policies surrounding it.

Here at MSU, there is an Emergency Management Policy run by the Emergency Management Task Force. According to 110.00 in the policy handbook, the main responsibilities of the task force are to act “on behalf of the president [and] ensure that the University has in place, in accordance with the resources allocated, an effective emergency management system.” The task force is ultimately run by the president of the university, and will follow the phases of preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery, given the circumstances of the situation.

Furthermore, the Workplace Violence Prevention Policy states “all reports of violence, threats, harassment, intimidation and other disruptive behavior will be taken seriously and will be dealt with appropriately. Individuals who commit such acts may be removed from the premises and may be subject to disciplinary action, criminal penalties or both.” This policy encourages either calling UPD, speaking to a supervisor, contacting a union official or calling human resources in the event of a threatening situation.

These are MSU’s current policies regarding campus violence. If there were an attack of any kind on campus, the university would follow their policies as discussed above. For more information, all policies are posted on MSU’s website.
