MSU’s research enterprise continues to innovate
In the face of a changing national research landscape, MSU is working to maintain its position in the sector. Backed by about $300 million in funding this year, the University is constantly aiming to improve its top-rated research enterprise.
As part of its land grant mission, MSU is called to support Montana by integrating education and service in its communities. One way the University does this is with its large research enterprise, which must continually adapt to the changing research environment as shifts in federal priorities are starting to impact some projects.
MSU recently added a new undergraduate research council and an undergraduate research student ambassador position, according to Alison Harmon, MSU’s vice president for Research and Economic Development. “These positions and groups are designed to help expand access, raise awareness and create more pathways for undergraduates to participate in research across every discipline.”
The Undergraduate Research Office is also working on outreach by creating more events and programs for students to connect with faculty mentors. Recent additions to MSU research include publications in interdisciplinary research journals and the hiring of the new student ambassador, according to the MSU website.
MSU research is not just for students and faculty; it directly affects Montana communities and the state’s economy. Much of MSU’s large research expenditure helps support local jobs, according to Harmon.
“The research we do is often in service to the state of Montana and Montana communities,” Harmon said. “This could be research that addresses an educational, environmental, agricultural or specific health concern.”
Harmon said that locally-focused research is important. Some projects tackle real-world issues in partnership with ranchers, schools and towns across Montana. According to her, these problems would be difficult to solve without university expertise.
Participation in research can further this local impact. “Students who gain training in research are prepared for the workforce, prepared to work for Montana industries and are sometimes engaging in entrepreneurship,” Harmon said.
At the end of last semester, federal funding cuts changed the way research is conducted on campus. “There is generally more uncertainty about the availability of funding, especially in areas that may not be aligned with current federal priorities,” Harmon said.
Even amid this confusion, MSU remains competitive thanks to its national security research. The University receives nearly half of its federal research funding — 48 percent — from the Department of Defense, according to Harmon. That portion has grown over the past several years, fueling projects that connect MSU scientists with defense initiatives.
Harmon explained that the real-world, hands-on experience gained from research transforms education for students. She said it also makes MSU more attractive when competing for grants because funders like to see student involvement written into proposals.
“At MSU, students are making important discoveries on their own and in partnership with their graduate student mentors and faculty advisors," Harmon said. “Students are an important, and I would say even essential part of the research enterprise at MSU.”
