Spire’s routesetting team closed down the lead climbing area in their south gym on April 2-3 in preparation for the adult competition on Friday, April 6 and the youth competition on Saturday, April 7. All roped climbing areas were closed on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the event to adorn their 50 feet of slabby, or angled, and overhanging walls with all kinds of routes, from crimpy, featuring the smallest holds, to pocket-like, holds that have a little divet, ranging in difficulty from 5.5 to 5.14.

Since the competition’s start in 2006, Spire’s Spring Fling has had plenty of time to get their desired style down. It exhibits a relaxed feel, much like MSU’s own annual bouldering competition, The Prince and Princess of Plastic, and competitors are made to feel at ease by having the whole floor to attempt routes alongside others. It is not until the finals round that it starts to feel more intense.

Only the most dedicated fans stayed (as it cost spectators who were Spire members $5 and non-members $10) to watch the few finalists climb the hardest routes in front of a cheering and encouraging crowd.

Bella Childre and Aaron Bugh were the female and male winners in the adult open category. Along with that, they each won the $1000 cash prize.

As spectators, it is always fun to see what the strongest climbers can achieve. To see them strive towards the top of the wall and to come down in triumph is inspiring to say the least.
