Sheriff's office identifies man fatally shot by deputy during domestic call in Butte

UPDATE: April 20 at 2:40 p.m.

The Butte-Silver Bow Coroner’s Office and the Butte Sheriff’s Office identified Gary Leroy Johnson, 82, of Butte, as the man shot and killed April 16 on Hope Road.

No other details were released.

The shooting is being investigated by the Montana Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, the sheriff’s office added.

BUTTE, Mont. – Butte police officers shot a man who aimed his shotgun at an officer during a standoff on Thursday night, according to the Butte Police Department.

The department said officers were responding to a caller who said her ex-husband had fired multiple gunshots at her. She was at her home in the 4800 block of Hope Road in Butte, where she lived with her ex-husband, but told the department she fled from the residence after he shot at her.

Her call was received at 10:34 p.m. Officers arrived within four minutes of her call and made sure she was safe, the department said. Then officers attempted to find the ex-husband.

They found him in a garage attached to the house, armed with a shotgun. The department said while officers gave him verbal commands and tried to get him to drop his weapon, he “raised his shotgun toward an officer.”

Officers fired at the man and he was shot multiple times.

The department said officers attempted lifesaving measures and received assistance from an A-1 ambulance and Butte Fire Rescue, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Butte police requested investigative assistance from the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, who remained at the scene throughout the night. Montana Highway Patrol also lent assistance with the investigation into the incident.

“DCI will conduct a thorough, independent investigation into the incident,” the Butte Police Department said.
