Track and Field split roster successful

The MSU Track and Field team split up for the weekend. Some of the roster traveled to California, whilst the rest of the Bobcats went to Missoula. It was a strong showing for the team in both competitions, with several impressive performances, including four top-place finishes.

In Missoula for the Montana Open, senior Mason Storm and sophomore Caleb North combined for a total of 6,117 points, the highest in the decathlon at the meet. Storm placed third in the event, and also ran a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles, out-sprinting his competition and finishing with a time of 14.86 seconds.Senior Trevor Simanski leaped the furthest at 22’05.25” (6.84m) in the long jump, and was rewarded with a first-place finish with teammate sophomore Caleb Neth, runner-up with 21’11.50” (6.69m).As the only athlete to take home a first-place finish for the women, senior Carter Theade cleared 11’05.75” (3.50m) in pole vault with junior Isabella Calabrese following behind her in second place. She cleared the same height, as a result of judge's decision.

To finish off the weekend, there were numerous top-10 records made down at the Triton Invitational in California on Saturday, April 14.

For the women, three of the Bobcats placed in the top 10 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Impressively, as a team, they had each of the top-five finishers in this event with sophomore Anna French in front of the pack with a time of 10:23, which was the second quickest time in program history. Behind her with a time of 10:35 was Trisha Carlson and Layne Oliver behind her at 10:44.MSU senior Amanda Jaynes put together the 15th fastest time in the nation for 400m hurdles with a time of 58.19 seconds. She also finished with a time of 13.91 seconds in the 100m hurdles, which tied her personal record and put her in fifth place.For the men, another shift will be need to be made in the Bobcat record books after senior Diego Leon ran his way to fourth all-time in the mile and finished second in the event with a time of 3:44. Behind him was freshman Cameron Carroll at 3:48 and Riley Collins with 3:56. Both were personal bests, and rewarded them with a fifth and 11th place finish.Junior Alex Lewis performed well with a second-place finish in the long jump and a personal best 47’10.50” in the triple jump, which earned him a fourth place finish.It was a great showing for the Bobcats in both the Montana Open and Triton Invitational. Some of the team’s athletes will return to California next weekend, where it will be their final journey before the Big Sky Conference Championships. It looks to be a busy week as the team will have athletes competing at three different competitions in the Mt. SAC Relays, Beach Invitational and Pacific Coast Intercollegiate from April 19-21.
