Victim identified, gun still missing in Rocking R Bar homicide as suspect appears in court

Jakob Lundberg, 22, made his initial appearance in Gallatin County Justice Court on Tuesday as new details emerged in the homicide outside Rocking R Bar early Monday morning.

The victim, previously unidentified, is 29-year-old Sidney Callaghan.

The incident began with an altercation between Lundberg and Callaghan inside the bar. Staff escorted both men outside where the fight continued, according to an affidavit written by Bozeman Detective Kyle Hodges. At some point in the fight, Lundberg walked to his vehicle and returned with a firearm.

“(Lundberg) pushes out his hands in an ‘isosceles’ shooting stance and aims a handgun at Callaghan,” Hodges wrote. “Lundberg lowers his weapon, walks closer to Callaghan and raises the firearm again. He shoots Callaghan and Callaghan falls to the ground.”

After shooting Callaghan multiple times, Lundberg fled the scene in his red Subaru WRX. Based on witness identification, police located the vehicle near Walmart and apprehended Lundberg. While he did not provide a voluntary statement to police, Hodges wrote that Lundberg made some “spontaneous statements about regretting what he had done.”

Lundberg also informed police that he threw the gun from his vehicle in an area “west of Rouse” and “north of Main,” near a white van.

“Members of the police department canvassed the area but have yet to locate the firearm,” Hodges wrote. “Lundberg also notified Detectives that he had called his dad and confessed.”

Detectives followed up with Lundberg’s father, who confirmed that his son admitted that he “shot somebody” and that he made a big mistake.

In addition to deliberate homicide, Lundberg faces a charge of evidence tampering for disposing of the gun, and criminal endangerment for allegedly shooting in the highly crowded downtown area.

“The sidewalks are heavily trafficked,” Hodges wrote. “Further, surveillance video showed the R Bar (to) be quite crowded, with several people running and taking cover when the gunshots were heard. There were also people standing very close to Callaghan.”

Lundberg is being held on no bond.
