'After the Herd': Hamilton gallery to feature paintings by artist Doug Taplin

Cassens Fine Art in Hamilton is hosting a solo exhibition of new work by artist Doug Taplin titled “After the Herd.”

Centered on paintings of bison and elk, the show considers the relationship between these animals and the land they inhabit, according to a statement released by the gallery. The exhibit's title is a nod to shifting populations over time and the resilience that has allowed some species to endure.

"There's a clarity in Doug's work that stands out," said Michelle Cassens, owner and curator of Cassens Fine Art. "He removes anything unnecessary and lets the subject carry itself. That kind of restraint is hard to pull off."

The exhibition will open with an artist reception, from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 and will remain on view through March 20.

“Raised on a ranch along the South Saskatchewan River, Taplin brings a lived understanding of open country to his work,” a statement released by the gallery reads. “Influenced by early visual languages such as cave art, he is drawn to the instinct to create and to our connection with animals. Each series begins with central idea, often starting with drawing before developing into layered oil paintings built through an intuitive process.”
