Bozeman Drivers Can Renew Some ID’s For Free During Month of July To Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday

BOZEMAN, Mont. — Montana will waive several Motor Vehicle Division fees during the month of July as part of the state’s recognition of America’s 250th birthday.  

Attorney General Austin Knudsen announced the temporary change on Wednesday, July 17th, during a brief press conference outside the Montana MVD office.  

The waived fees apply to driver’s licenses, CDL credentials, replacement of Real IDs, and ID card renewals.  

Knudsen also says residents who renew ID cards in July and add the black citizenship marker of an eagle in flight will have those costs waived.  

“What better way to help celebrate America’s 250th than by giving back to the taxpayers of Montana. So, we are proud to recognize this 250th milestone by making it easier than ever for Montanans to update their driver’s license and ID cards,” said Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen. 

Knudsen says Montana changed its ID cards in December 2025 and explained that action from the 2025 Legislature gave residents the option to add a black “eagle in flight” logo to ID cards to show U.S. citizenship.  

He also said the Montana Department of Justice and the Montana Motor Vehicle Division plan to watch how the fee waiver works in the month of July before deciding whether to extend it further.
