Bozeman landmarks to undergo changes as Audrey’s Pizza closes and home at 533 E. Mendenhall hits market

Bozeman, Mont. — Two longtime Bozeman landmarks are undergoing some changes as Audrey’s Pizza is preparing to close permanently, and a well-known house on East Mendenhall has officially gone up for sale.  

Audrey’s Pizza has served fresh pizza slices since the store’s owner – Audrey Anderson – bought the property in the 1960’s. The shop is now set to serve its last slice on May 30.  

Owner Steve Schlagel says his vision to prioritize other projects, as well as a building sale, forced the closure. 

“We were approached by another group to purchase the building,” Schlagel said. “At the last minute, they weren’t able to fulfill their obligations, so we were then unfortunately committed to selling the building, so we had no choice then to close it down.”  

Schlagel has owned Audrey’s since 2010. He helped bring back the business after it originally closed in 1990.  

He says even with the closure, he hopes that the community remembers Audrey’s as being about more than just pizza. 

“You know, I guess it's that legacy that is family, its fair prices and you know, just a good, positive environment to be at,” Schlagel said. 

Schlagel told Nonstop Local that upon hearing news of the closure, some of Audrey’s original customers have made plans to fly into Bozeman from across the country to enjoy one last slice. 

Elsewhere in Bozeman, the house with the circular window at 533 East Mendenhall is officially on the market.  

The property is known to many as the former home of Wax Museum Records, which was owned by the late Kels Koch, who passed away in February.

The house was built in 1910, measures more than 1,200 square feet and sits one block off Main Street.
