BOZEMAN, Mont. — Officers, detectives and staff with the Bozeman Police Department wore jeans on International Denim Day to support survivors of sexual violence and help educate the community.

Denim Day grew from a 1992 case in Italy involving an 18-year-old student and her 45-year-old driving instructor. The instructor was first convicted of rape before Italy’s Supreme Court overturned that ruling.

The court reasoned that the victim’s tight jeans showed consent. That backlash led to the launch of Denim Day in 1999.

Since then, the department said, the day has been recognized by law enforcement, prosecutors, advocates and communities around the world.
