Bozeman to add over 400 stop signs before 2030

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Over the next seven-and-a-half months, Bozeman will receive over 400 stop signs at 328 intersections as a part of the City’s attempt to put stop signs at every uncontrolled intersection.

The City of Bozeman said Bozeman has had a “long history” of unsigned intersections, which residents learned to navigate by treating as four-way stops. However, the City said, non-residents tend to speed through intersections without stopping.

“Bozeman’s streets have become busier, and tourists aren’t always familiar with our streets,” Bozeman’s Transportation & Engineering Director Nick Ross said. “We’ve heard concerns about this and uncontrolled intersections in general from residents, and we’re listening to those concerns. This is a helpful safety improvement for our neighborhood streets.”

From May 2026 to 2030, a City project aims to install over 400 stop signs at 328 intersections.

The first batch of stop signs will be installed in the neighborhood around Montana State University. Next year, the Valley Unit neighborhood and Northeast neighborhood will receive installations. In 2028, the west side of town will receive installations and 2029 will see installations in the far west side and south side.

The final year of the project, 2030, will end with stop sign installations in the northwest side of town.

“This project aligns with our safety vision. We’ve been focusing on uncontrolled intersections and traffic calming on neighborhood streets, and for larger streets, we have looked at street reconstructions, intersection improvements, and crossing enhancements. All of this is aimed at creating a safer Bozeman for all,” Ross said.
