Browning man sentenced to more than 15 years for assaults and sexual abuse

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that a Browning man was sentenced on April 23, 2026, to 188 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release after convictions in two assault cases and a sexual abuse case.

Kevin James Trombley, 28, was found guilty by one jury in October 2025 of aggravated sexual abuse and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. A separate jury found him guilty in March 2026 of assault resulting in serious bodily injury, assault with a dangerous weapon and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the cases.

Prosecutors said one case stemmed from a June 2022 house party outside Browning at the home of mutual family members.

Additionally, prosecutors said Trombley used force against a woman in a bathroom and engaged in non-consensual sex with her. The woman then got out and reported the assault immediately.

Law enforcement officers responded and interviewed Trombley. He first denied any contact with Jane Doe, then later said he had been in the bathroom with her briefly while continuing to deny any sexual contact.

Prosecutors also said that in July 2023, Trombley assaulted Jane Doe’s father at a rodeo in Browning after the father confronted him. The release said the man suffered a head injury and needed a medical procedure to repair injuries to his face.

A second case focused on the early morning hours of March 23, 2024, after Trombley and others entered a residence without permission, according to the release. Prosecutors said a fight started inside, moved outside and ended in a shooting.

“What are we going to do?” a witness account said.

Trombley went to his truck while John Doe stood in the driveway unarmed with his hands up. He then fired through the truck window and hit Doe in the abdomen.

The release said Doe was taken to Blackfeet Community Hospital and then transferred to Benefis Hospital for surgery on internal injuries.

Investigators later found Trombley asleep in a back bedroom at another residence, according to the release. They reported finding a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber pistol between the box spring and mattress and a spent shell casing on the passenger-side floorboard of his truck.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the cases. The FBI and Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services investigated.
