Butte man faces half-dozen felonies for alleged sexual abuse of children

A 34-year-old Butte man, Tyler James Kingsbury, made his initial appearance Friday afternoon in Judge James Kilmer’s Justice Court.

According to court documents, Kingsbury was charged with one count of attempted sexual abuse of children and five counts of sexual abuse of children — all felonies. His bond has been set at $500,000.

The half-dozen charges were filed by Ann Shea, Butte-Silver Bow prosecutor. The incidents allegedly occurred between 2015 and 2017, and in December 2025.

On the first count, Kingsbury allegedly attempted to persuade a child under the age of 16 to send him nude photos of herself.

As for the five sexual abuse counts, court documents state that around Dec. 11, 2025, "Kingsbury knowingly possessed visual or print mediums, including a medium by use of electronic communication, depicting children engaging in sexual conduct, actual or simulated."

If found guilty, Kingsbury could receive a life sentence and a $10,000 fine on each child sexual abuse count.

The basics of the accusations were provided on Friday, but prosecutors typically wait to provide specific details on what they allege occurred when cases are transferred to District Court.

A preliminary hearing has been set for April 2.
