Cats swing and serve into spring

The 2018-2019 season for the MSU Tennis teams has come and gone with exciting action throughout. The men’s team finished 6-11 overall with a 5-5 record in conference. Due to tiebreakers, MSU missed the conference tournament as they placed seventh for the year. The women’s team finished 3-16 overall, with a 1-9 record in conference and hope to build towards next year.

The men’s team hosted the University of Montana (UM) and Southern Utah University (SUU) to close out the season on April 18 and 19, respectively. With a spot in the tournament still up for grabs, the Cats knew the importance of both matches, starting with the Griz on Thursday. MSU snuck away with the victory after freshman Marcos Zelver sealed the deal in his number six singles match, resulting in a 4-3 Bobcat victory.

The Cats welcomed Southern Utah next with a win-and-you’re-in mentality for the conference tournament. The Cats played hard but fell short as the Thunderbirds captured the final match. Despite the loss, MSU still had a chance to make the conference tournament depending on other conference results. Unfortunately, in the end, the Cats couldn’t seal the deal.

The women’s team wrapped up their season against the UM on Saturday April 20. In a challenging season for the Cats, the final match seemed to be in their hands as they held a 3-2 advantage going into the number five and six singles matches. But UM found traction and completed the comeback to take the match 4-3. The tennis teams are looking forward to improving on their season in years to come.
