Charley Crockett playing Downtown Billings Skate Park in June

Charley Crockett once sang longingly about the "Time of the Cottonwood Trees," and someone must have told him that Populus deltoides grow particularly thick along the Yellowstone River.

The singer-songwriter, who's become a country luminary due to his megawatt charisma and seemingly endless supply of songs (April's "Age of the Ram" will be his third studio album in just over a year), is playing Billings on Tuesday, June 30. Tickets go on sale Friday morning. Booked by the Pub Station, Crockett will play the Downtown Billings Skate Park.

Crockett is from San Benito, Texas, — same hometown as Freddy Fender — but he's become a Montana fixture over the last decade. Last summer he played a show in Pine Creek (pop. 80) and another in Emigrant (pop. 370). He sold them both out in hours, even though those two venues are about a 15 mile drive from each other. Although in Crockett's defense, he jetted up to Whitefish to play another show in between the pair of Paradise Valley dates. The current press photo his team sends out shows Crockett, with steely eyes and matinee idol good looks, posed inside Emigrant's Old Saloon.

But this summer his lone Montana show announced so far is the Billings date. Although if you're going to play one show in Montana, the Downtown Billings Skate Park is the place to do it. Just aside the railroad tracks and nestled up against the L and L Building, it's the state's hidden venue gem. And with a show start time of 5:30 p.m., Crockett should hit his stride right around golden hour.
