City of Three Forks Seeking Answers To Discolored Water

Three Forks, Mont. — Residents in Three Forks say they are still looking for answers as discolored water continues to affect part of the city.  

Since late May, the city has been dealing with suspected sediment in water main lines that has turned some water brown and discolored.  

One resident says measures needed to be put in place initially so that the discolored water did not come back. 

“I noticed that there was a little discoloration in our water in the morning, and what went through my mind is that I would need to run a little bit of water so that it would clear up,” said Bob Crosiar.  

Crosiar, a Three Forks resident and public works employee, explained he had been dealing with the issue for a while.  

“Yeah, late May, early June. I didn’t take note on an exact date. I was out of the state for a few days, it would have been after Memorial Day weekend,” said Crosiar.  

In a Facebook post, the city says the discolored water is limited to four locations within Three Forks, along First Avenue East between East Dale and East Birch streets. 

Crosiar says flushing efforts of the fire hydrants appeared to be helping in that area to clear the water up. 

“I believe it's close to if not resolved with our flushing efforts. Since I've flushed the water main on first Avenue east, I personally have not had any more discoloration in my house,” said Bob Crosiar.  

The city reported it has identified the main areas where the discoloration is showing up but confirmation as to the cause of the discoloration has not yet been confirmed by the city at this time. 

Officials say possible causes include heavy sprinkler use that can stir up sediment in water main lines or a water main leak.  

Even with the discoloration, the city continues to conduct routine water sampling and flushing fire hydrants along First Avenue East.  

The city has also determined the water to be potable, meaning it is safe to drink even though it may not initially look clear.
