Conrad Anker talks climate change

On Monday, Oct. 22, Conrad Anker will discuss climate change and its effects on recreational outlets at Passion into Purpose, hosted by Protect Our Winters (POW), a non-profit organization working to reverse the effects of global warming.

Anker, a renowned mountaineer with many first ascents under his belt and a lifelong advocate of outdoor pursuits, will speak about how climate change is compromising the future of certain outdoor activities. He recognizes that the first step in addressing this issue is becoming aware of its influence on climbing and mountaineering. “Collectively speaking, climate change is our big challenge. The ‘summit’ of climate change will require a multi-generational effort” Anker said.

Global warming is creating changes within the foundations of ice climbing as it’s becoming more and more compromised. The unstable structures in ice climbing can’t be reversed and Anker hopes to mitigate this issue by urging people to get involved in voting for this issue which is a priority to many people. There has been a steady progression of reduced natural formations of ice where ice climbing ideally happens.

The future of these natural structures that outdoor sports relies so heavily on is at risk because of climate change. “Simply living has an associated cost to the environment. The cost of doing nothing is higher,” said Anker. Climate change will continue to compromise this planet, but there’s a way to slow that progress.

The biggest change will come from community members voicing their concerns to their elected representatives. The upcoming elections are a prime catalyst for moving in the direction of protecting these natural features. Anker voiced that POW’s aim is not to be political, but politics have become intertwined with the debate of climate change and its effects on outdoor pursuits everywhere. Voting and electing representatives that support climate change is one of the biggest ways to change the current situation. This event is free for students and community members and will be held in Reid 108 at 7:30 p.m.
