Emma’s House works to raise awareness about child abuse in the Bitterroot

Emma’s House is partnering with several Bitterroot Valley businesses to raise awareness about child abuse throughout the month of April.

“April is National Child Abuse Awareness month and highlights the importance of communities working together to implement effective strategies that support families and prevent child maltreatment,” a statement released by Emma’s House reads. “Communities are encouraged to increase awareness about child and family well-being and work together to implement effective strategies that support families and prevent child abuse and neglect.”

Emma’s House is a facility-based program in Hamilton dedicated to helping children heal from the trauma of abuse and neglect. Emma’s House provides forensic interviews, child abuse specific medical exams, and trauma-focused counseling for children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

Community members are encouraged to share information on social media to educate others about child abuse prevention programs throughout the month of April, contact state and congressional representatives and engage with local organizations that support families. People are also encouraged to learn the signs of child abuse and neglect, and to know what steps to take if you suspect a child is in danger.

“For many, child abuse is a very uncomfortable topic to discuss. However, the services and support that Emma’s House offers to the most vulnerable in our community are crucial,” said Kelly Hanley, Emma’s House Board president.

Emma’s House will be hosting several events in conjunction with local businesses to spread awareness of child abuse prevention.

“We hope that these April events will help bring awareness to the mission of Emma’s House and educate the public on how everyone can do their part,” Hanley said.

April 3, 5-7 p.m.: Bitterroot Brewing pint night

April 9, 6-9 p.m.: Eagles Bingo night

April 11, 11-1 p.m.: Culture Crawl table, Chapter One “Blind Date with a Book” throughout the month of April

April 17, 6-9 p.m.: Pickle ball night

April 18, 11-2 p.m.: Evan’s Ace Grill for a Good Cause

April 24, 6-9 p.m.: Nap’s pint night

Events are also planned at Massa Home Center, Valley Drug and Variety, Mission Bistro, Corvallis Tavern and the Rocky Knob.

“It’s wonderful to see so many businesses from Darby to Stevensville engaged in April events for Child Abuse Prevention as well as raising awareness about Emma’s House,” said Val Widmer, Emma’s House Executive Director.
