Fire contained near Mt. Helena summit, trailheads still closed

The trailhead and trails at Mt. Helena are back open after Monday's wildfire, according to the City of Helena.

UPDATE: June 15 at 5:45 p.m.

The fire near the summit of Mt. Helena is contained, but trailheads in the area remain closed, Helena Fire Department said.

Command of the fire will transfer to the Department of Natural Resources, which will continue helicopter water drops until the fire is out, the department said.

Helena Fire reported the fire was first sized at about 100 feet by 200 feet in a timbered area near the summit of Mt. Helena.

The cause remains under investigation.

HELENA, Mont. — The Helena Fire Department and Montana Department of Natural Resources are responding to a fire on Mt. Helena, the city of Helena announced.

Ground crews are reaching the site through the Mt. Helena trailhead. The city asks residents and visitors to stay out of the area so emergency crews can work.

People are also asked not to fly drones nearby so aircraft can respond to the fire.
