Great Falls water park opens June 6 with two attractions closed

Great Falls, Mont. — Two popular features at Electric City Water Park will stay closed this summer as the city works through safety problems and weighs repair options.

A recent safety assessment found mechanical and structural issues with the Flow Rider and the Lazy River that did not meet state safety codes. City officials confirmed both attractions were taken out of service while they looked into what comes next.

Jessica Compton, the city’s deputy director of park and recreation, said the city determined one of two major steps would be needed.

“It was determined that we need to do a big repair or a big replacement on that,” Compton said.

Compton explained the price of fixing the attractions could be significant because they are not meeting state safety standards. She said replacing those features may cost about the same as repairing them.

“Essentially to put in a new Flow Rider, Lazy River or amenity piece would be about the same cost,” Compton said.

The city was still trying to get an exact dollar amount for the work. Officials said they were reviewing their options before deciding how to move forward.

Even with those closures, city staff said the water park still plan to offer plenty for visitors when the season begins. Patrick King, the city’s aquatics coordinator, outlined some of what will be available at the park.

“We still have a 50-meter pool, two power tower slides, we still have other slides, a rock-climbing wall, we’re going to add in volleyball nets, cornhole. We’re going to make it a fun experience for everyone still and keep it going,” King said.

Electric City Water Park and neighborhood pools are set to open June 6 at noon.
