Hannah Scott etches name into Bobcat history

With Bobcat volleyball season well underway, senior outside hitter Hannah Scott, has found her way into the record books. On Friday, Sept. 3, Scott hit her 1,000th kill of her college career, a milestone reached by only 15 others in MSU volleyball history. This week, TheExponent spoke with Scott about her 1000th kill, volleyball and her time as a Bobcat.

Scott started playing volleyball young — six or seven years old, according to her best estimate. She was inspired by her uncle, who played at UCLA and won a national championship in 2006. Once she started playing for a club team, she realized it was a passion she wanted to pursue. “I was eleven at the time and would look up to the girls that were older than me who committed to play in college early in their high school careers,” Scott recalls. “From then on, I had my heart set on playing in college.”

Living away from home during her college career has pushed Scott to grow as a student, athlete and teammate. Now a senior, Scott has seen many teammates graduate and has welcomed many new ones over the years. “I know for a fact that the relationships I have made on this team will be ones that last a lifetime,” she said. Since Scott joined Bobcat volleyball in 2017, she has helped elevate the team’s standard of play to the point that making the Big Sky Conference Championship is an expectation now, rather than a hope. “My freshman season we were one or two spots shy of getting to go to the conference championship. My sophomore year, we made the cut and since then it has been a standard of ours,” Scott said. Making the tournament isn’t all that Scott wants to accomplish, though. She has her sights set on hardware. “Before I leave I want to win a Big Sky Championship with this team,” she said. “I think everyone involved knows that we have something special which is super motivating as we move into conference play.”

As for her 1,000th kill, Scott is aware of the magnitude of her achievement. “It’s something that has been in the back of my head since playing at Sacramento State at some point my freshman year,” Scott explained. “During this particular match, one of the Hornets was celebrated for hitting her 1,000th kill. It’s crazy to think back to that moment knowing that this is something that I was able to accomplish.”

Bobcat volleyball began conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 21, with a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-23, 25-17) against Montana. The team will continue to compete against conference rivals until late November when the conference championships are scheduled to take place.

As Scott looks toward the home stretch of her final season at MSU, she feels that there is plenty of work yet to be done. “I’m definitely not ready to say ‘goodbye’ to Bobcat Nation just yet, knowing that something special is in store for this team in the coming months,” Scott said.
