The history of telephone area codes reflects the growth of the modern communications system — from hand-connected local calls to a vast, automated network spanning a continent.

When Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876, there were no area codes and hardly any phone numbers at all. Early telephones were connected through local switchboards operated by people, usually women, who physically plugged wires into jacks to connect callers. If you wanted to reach someone, you simply asked the operator. Most calls were local, and numbers were short — sometimes just one to four digits. Long-distance calling existed but required coordination between multiple operators and could be slow and cumbersome.

As cities expanded in the early twentieth century, the number of telephones grew rapidly. Exchanges became more complex, and phone numbers lengthened. Automation began replacing manual switchboards in large cities, allowing customers to dial numbers directly. However, long-distance calls across states still required operator assistance well into the 1940s. The system needed a standardized, nationwide structure to keep up with demand.

In 1947, engineers at AT&T developed the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). This plan divided the United States, Canada and parts of the Caribbean into geographic numbering regions, each assigned a three-digit area code. The system was designed to work efficiently with rotary telephones, which dialed numbers by spinning a wheel. Because lower numbers required less time to dial, large population centers were given codes that were quicker to enter. For example, New York received 212, while less populated areas received higher-number combinations.

The original plan assigned each state at least one code. Some large states had several from the beginning. California, for instance, was divided into 213 (Los Angeles area), 415 (San Francisco area), and 916 (northern California). Smaller states often had just one. Montana was assigned 406, a designation it still retains today — making it one of the few states that has kept its original single area code without splits or overlays.

Under the original design, the middle digit of an area code was either 0 or 1. Codes with a 0 typically covered an entire state, while those with a 1 indicated a state divided into multiple regions. For decades, callers dialed only seven digits for local calls and ten digits for long-distance connections.

Beginning in the 1980s, demand for telephone numbers surged. The rise of fax machines, computer modems, pagers and eventually mobile phones consumed large blocks of numbers. By the 1990s, many regions were running out. Two main strategies emerged: splits and overlays. In a split, an existing geographic area was divided, and part of it received a new code. In an overlay, a new code was assigned to the same geographic area as an existing one, requiring ten-digit dialing for all calls in that region.

Overlays gradually became more common because they avoided forcing customers to change existing numbers. However, they ended the era when an area code clearly identified a single geographic region. Today, many metropolitan areas have multiple overlapping codes.

The NANP remains in use across North America and several Caribbean nations. Dialing +1 followed by the area code and local number connects calls throughout this system. Although mobile phones and internet-based calling have reduced the geographic meaning of area codes, they still carry cultural identity and historical significance.

By the way, it is projected that Montana will need an additional area code by 2031.
