Jefferson County sheriff sends cellphone alert notifying public of wildfire near Montana City

Firefighters responded to a wildfire Tuesday afternoon in the Skihi Road area west of Montana City, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

At around 3 p.m., the sheriff's office sent out alert notifying people in the area of the fire and the need to be prepared to evacuate.

"This is an incident notice from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. There is a wildfire in the Skihi Road area west of Montana City," the alert read. "Those near the incident must be prepared to evacuate. If you feel unsafe or need extra time, strongly consider leaving now."

In a Facebook post the office said they were making every effort to notify those at risk of evacuation, "but this may be the only notice provided due to time and resource limitations."

Around 6 p.m., the office sent another mass cellphone alert notifying the fire had been extinguished.

The alert read, "The Holmes Fire is controlled and the Incident Notice for the Skihi Road area is clear. No evacuations are necessary."
