Jericho Creek Fire burning 1,000 acres near Helena

The Jericho Creek Fire continues to hold at around 1,000 acres burning, according to an update from the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest.

"Fire behavior increased yesterday afternoon and some single tree torching was observed," the forest service said. "Similar fire behavior is expected today."

The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest said firefighters will be working on indirect containment strategies Wednesday as heavy downed trees and timber in the area "pose challenges to ensuring firefighter safety."

The wildfire, which officials named the Jericho Creek Fire, grew significantly since it was first reported on Wednesday, and is now estimated to be burning around 1,000 acres after high winds and natural growth spread the flames and firing operations connected the fire with with the 2025 Jericho Mountain Fire's footprint.

Authorities determined that the Jericho Creek Fire was caused by a lightning strike.

Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest (HLCNF) officials reported on Sunday that the fire has not grown over the past 24 hours, with rain and snow falling in the area since Saturday. Rain and snowfall is reportedly expected to continue through Sunday evening, which will help in keeping the flames from spreading.

Containment lines are actively being patrolled by firefighters as they continue with indirect containment efforts.

HLCNF officials urged the public to continue avoiding the area as well as the Sally Ann Mineral Site.

LEWIS AND CLARK COUNTY, Mont. – Officials with the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest announced on Wednesday evening that firefighters are currently responding to a wildfire located south of MacDonald Pass and west of Jericho Mountain.

Officials estimated the blaze to be burning approximately five acres, and reported that it is visible from Highway 12.

No further information has been shared at this time, however authorities noted that updates will be provided as the situation develops.
