Join the scrum with MSU rugby
When asked to name a sport, most people wouldn’t say rugby unless they have some sort of personal connection to it. Commonly brushed to the side, rugby is considerably undervalued. In reality rugby is a difficult game put on by players who demonstrate determination at its finest. Denali Smith, the vice president of the women’s rugby program at MSU, would describe rugby as a sport considerably close to soccer and football. “Rugby is a mix between football and soccer but that explanation doesn't really do it any justice. The game has really strange rules that aren’t seen in any other sporting event,” Smith said. “For example, you have to always pass the ball backwards, never forwards. The game is awesome because anyone can play, whether you are big or small there is a place for you.”
Not only can rugby be a thrill to watch, it also provides the ability for players to grow and adapt. “With such an aggressive sport, players have to truly love this game and be willing to play through their pain for the other 14 players on the field,” Zange Stewart, a junior on the women’s rugby team, said. “This also translates off the field, as many players are high achieving students in difficult majors, employees and are a part of other organizations.”
Perhaps the toughest part of the sport would be the aggressiveness. These are athletes who tackle with little to no protection besides a mouth guard. When asked about the toughest parts of rugby, Smith said. “It would probably be getting over the fear of getting hurt, which can be really hard sometimes. What I like to think about is that you are taught proper form for everything you do in rugby and this will keep you safe. Obviously, accidents will happen but that can happen while playing any sport. The ref is in the game to make sure that all the rules are being followed and they will do their best to keep you safe.” Smith also said the less confident players are, the more likely an accident will occur.
“To me being an MSU rugby player means that I am a part of something that isn’t just going to last in college,” Smith said. “Rugby can take you so many places and the people that you meet in rugby will always be there for you. It doesn't just end once you graduate, there are so many adult leagues that you can play for.” According to the Montana Rugby Union, there are six adult rugby teams in Montana.
Rugby is an extremely interesting sport, and both Smith and Stewart had much to say on some key takeaways involving the game. “Although rugby can look extremely intimidating, it is one of the most genuine and welcoming communities I have ever gotten to be a part of. Everyone in it cares for each other, as well as for those around them. I have made lifelong friends through this sport and am extremely grateful for the opportunities it has given me,” Stewart said. Smith followed this up with a little note to the public: “I would tell them that rugby is one of the most amazing sports to watch and play! Also it is truly a culture which is so amazing to be a part of.”
