Letter to the editor: National Gun Violence Awareness Day
This June 5 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Nationally, guns are the number one killer of children and teens ahead of car accidents and cancer. Tragically, my 9-year-old nephew was shot and killed with an unsecured gun. Montana also has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.
This day is about awareness and action. We can all play a role in preventing gun deaths by talking about secure storage and supporting local prevention efforts.
Events are taking place across the state. Find local events by texting ORANGE to 644-33 and share online with #WearOrange.
Beckie Squires,
Helena
