Letter to the editor: The Republican Party is the party of shame

Donald Trump has ignored and defied the Constitution he swore to uphold. The Big Lie that he maintains to this day lacks any factual basis but has been adopted by most Republican office-holders. He has pardoned the rioters he inspired on January 06, and his party has long abandoned any objection to the insurrection and its perpetrators.

Montana Republicans, like their Washington compatriots, want to restrict voting based on the lie that elections are vulnerable to corruption. They want to make ballot measures more difficult. They promote partisan election of judges in order to fast-track their war on Montana's constitution. Like Trump, they don't trust citizens to make their own unfettered choices.

In Montana and in Washington, environmental protections have been scrapped. Climate science is ignored in favor of wholesale fossil fuel development. Alternative energy, more and more efficient and necessary, is being canceled and abandoned.

How much more of this blatant malfeasance can the country endure? Trump's war with Iran will be a test.
